چکیده

This note reports a method for studying the relationship between crystals and the organic matrix in calcified structures by means of decalcification of single thin sections. The mollusc shell has been used in developing the method. Electron microscope studies of the organic matrix of the mollusc shell have been carried out by making replicas of the normal or etched shell surfaces (Gr5goire, 1957, 1959, 1961a, 1961b; Watabe and Wilbur, 1961), by thin sectioning (Wada, 1961; Watabe, unpublished), and following ultrasonic disintegration of the matrix (GrSgoire et al., 1955; Gr~goire, 1959, 1961b) after decalcification of the shell. These methods do not lend themselves readily to a detailed examination of the structural relationships between matrix and crystals. However, we have found that the relationships can be made clear by comparing normal and decalcified serial sections and through partial decalcification of individual sections of shell.

Electron Microscopic Studies on the Organic Matrix of Enamel and Dentin

In previously published electron microscopic studies on the organic substance of enamel, the organic matrix was depicted in thin sections as a meshwork of delicate fibrils.1'"i " If one compares these structures with photographs obtained by the replica method using mineralized enamel, the original relationship between the organic and the inorganic components of the enamel is difficult to recons...

Effects of Nanotube/Matrix Interface on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer Mechanical Properties

In this paper, experimental and Finite Element Methods have been used to determine mechanical properties of nanocomposites. Standard tensile and compression samples with 0.0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 weight fraction of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT) were prepared and tested. Nanotube weight fraction was varied to investigate the effects of nanotube weight fraction on nanocomposite...

Improved method of embedding with epoxy resin 'Quetol 651' for both light and electron microscopic observation of identical sites in semi-thin sections.

on a conventional ultramicrotome. Semi-thin sections on grids were stained with the Giemsa method and methylene blue-azure II-basic fuchsin. Staining without removal of the embedding matrix was sharp and brilliant. These stained sections were observed under a light microscope. For electron microscopy, they were doubly stained with uranyl acetate and lead salt. Identical sites on such sections c...

See shells anew

Organisms exert remarkable controls over the minerals that form such an important part of their internal or external skeletons. For example, the microenvironment in animals that use calcium carbonate in their shells determines not only where and when crystals form but also which crystalline form, or polymorph, they will be. As illustrated in the scanning electron micrographs above, the segmente...

Studies on Structural and Optical Characterization of In-Zn-S Ternary Thin Films Prepared by Spray Pyrolysis

Thin films of indium doped zinc sulfide (ZnS) for different indium (In) concentrations (x=0.0 - 0.8) were deposited onto glass substrate by spray pyrolysis method at 523K temperature. Aqueous solution of zinc acetate, indium chloride and thiorea were used to deposit the In-Zn-S film. The deposited thin films were characterized by Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)...
